Shien
For my brand, I selected “Shein”
The company's brand is fast fashion. They are selling clothes that are manufactured in Beijing by underage children. A lot of people are saying that the fashion brand is exploiting young kids and forcing them to work all hours of the day in order to complete orders in a short period of time. The working conditions that are being placed on these young workers are terrible. Some sources are saying that they are working so hard and so often that their hands are bleeding. The thing that interested me about this brand was the aggressive claims that the business was running a sweatshop. This term is not used lightly, it includes terrible working conditions, long hours, and sometimes child exploitation.
The company's values and stance on the accusations included making a “tik Tok” account that showed workers completing their daily tasks of making clothes and packaging them. On this account there are constant comments that are asking if the employees are “okay” and if they need help. The company has never addressed these claims and potentially never will. The staff that works for the company has never publicly come out and said that there was an issue.
People have been saying that there was writing on the tags of their clothing and that it was written in blood. In these accusations it was concluded that there is no complete evidence that these things were written by the workers:
Other sources are saying that there have been complaints from consumers, they are saying that they are poor quality and not what the pictures show. In this blog written by Elizabeth McKnight, she explains the good and bad of what Shein can produce,
One last source that was recognized included the idea of boycotting in this article was the idea of no longer shopping on Shein. A lot of newer generations include the idea that they should no longer support a business that does fast fashion, there are other brands such as Urban Outfitters, Free People, and Romwe.
If I were the brand manager I would first make sure that all of these claims are false and not true. Obviously, if these are true the situation needs to be addressed and changed. Following that, i would send out ads showing nice clean facilities of wear the clothes were being made to show that Shien does not work with little kids in slave shops. I would also make a sizable donation to a company that fights against Sweatshops and child labor.
I have learned a lot doing this blog, Not everything is what you see on the outside sometimes you gotta do research. Knowing that Shien clothes are super cheap and knowing what goes on in other Countries I see why people could believe these claims. It defiantly could be plausible but hopefully, it is not. To go with that though I'm still surprised that Shein has not taken further action to address these issues/Claims.
